Our Story
For us, it’s about family.
My name is Ben Davis, and my wife and I own 8th Day Farms. Farming has been in my family as far back as six generations. Whether it was cattle or hog farming, raising animals has been a constant throughout the years in my family. It started with my great-great-great grandfather raising cattle in West Lafayette, IN. My great grandfather began hog farming by raising Berkshire pigs in West Lafayette and was continued by my mother raising Yorkshire pigs in Hagerstown, IN. My wife and I began our farm two years ago after our children took an interest in swine during 4-H. Ever since, we have been raising Berkshire, Yorkshire, and Duroc pigs on our farm in Central Indiana.
Here’s the bottom line: We love our pigs and raising them is a family affair. We love watching them grow. We love seeing them play on fresh bedding. We love how they come to greet us when we walk up to their pens. We are grateful for the lessons they teach us. Our children are learning the endless responsibilities of raising animals and the hard work it takes every day. These are lessons that can’t be taught from a book.
Our pigs are pasture raised on a farm on the north side of Westfield, Indiana. It is here that we run our farrow to finish farm. We use pens for farrowing, and piglets are kept with their mother for approximately four weeks . Once they are old enough, the pigs are moved outside where they can explore, root around, or lay in the sunshine or mud. They always have access to shelter away from the elements like rain, wind, cold, and sun whenever they need it. Our pigs eat a well-balanced diet that is void of hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides. We understand that consumers desire a product that is fresh, clean and ethically raised. Keeping our pigs happy, safe, and healthy is our ultimate goal.
